Thanks, AC...Our Christmas Angel

Due to our Christmas Angel, AC, we have had a better and more humbling Christmas than we could have imagined!  Yes, we discovered our Christmas Angel and since our first angel arrived 3 weeks ago (the one with all the gift cards), we have had several more.  AC submitted our name to a radio station that organizes a program to help individuals, couples, and families in need.  Due to this, and some others finding out about our situation, we have had a very overwhelmingly wonderful holiday!

We received the following:
  • Several gift cards from a family that wished to remain annoymous.
  • The "Y" family sent us a gift card.
  • Another family blessed our family with groceries and gifts for the kids, along with diapers and wipes.
  •  Yesterday we received another gift card from an anonymous family.
  • A few days ago a woman stopped by our home and left us with paper and bath products as well as an outdoor kitchen toy for the family and a few clothes for the girls.

  • Then on 12/28, Santa and four elves came to our house, brought presents for all the kids...clothes, barbies, dolls, a game, book, stuffed animals, and a gift card.  After gifts, one of the elves read a story to the girls about Christmas. The girls thought it was really magical and amazing that Santa came to their house!

Thank you so very, VERY much, AC for thinking of us and allowing others to help our family out during this tough year. This whole experience was wonderful and we are truly grateful to the overwhelming generosity!

I can't wait to have our life back to normal and to pay it forward to a family...hoping that will be next Christmas.  Although the past 6 months have been kinda tough, emotionally and financially, this has been a good experience for me.  It has humbled me, reminded me of what is truly important in life, helped me prioritize better, and has given me a more grounded look at things.

THANK YOU SO VERY, VERY MUCH, AC...you are an amazing friend and a wonderful Christmas Angel!

Ho, Ho, Ho...Merry Christmas! Wait, you want MORE?!

I did it!  I had my first solo outing with all four kids, and not only did I survive, so did they!  ahahah.  Totally kidding...kind of.  No really.  They were amazing.  And, considering it was hot and crowded, and they had to wait in line for over 40 minutes, my kids were great.  Delaney and Katie were polite and played without fighting or getting into other people's space.  Rowe listened and didn't throw fits when I wouldn't let her wander off, and Charlie just slept.

We went and saw Santa Claus at the mall yesterday.  They, as stated above, did wonderful!  I told the girls as we got closer that I needed just ONE nice picture, so we went over what they had to do...look at the camera and smile.  I didn't really care how Charlie and Rowe looked (in that I was not concerned about them looking at the camera or smiling), but they did great too (of course, Charlie just slept through the whole thing).  But, I told them they had to do the picture and then could go through their list with Santa.  I haven't actually seen a child with a physical list in years, if ever!  You know, the one they show in movies where a girl, or boy, sits on Santa's lap and reads off a list?  Well, Delaney did that.  It was really cute.  I heard, as I was getting Charlie and Rowena back into the stroller, the following conversation:

Delaney:  "I want LPS.  That's Littlest Pet Shop.  I want..."
Santa:  "More snow?"
Delaney:  "yeah"
Santa:  "And, you want MORE brothers and sisters?"Delaney: "yeah"
Santa:  "You don't have enough?"
Delaney:  "No.  I want more.  I want twins.  My sister wants Mommy to have triplets."
Santa:  "Oh.  What does Mommy want?"Delaney:  "I don't know.  I want..."

At this point, I stop listening, as I'm scared to what else might be on that list!!!

Tired Little Girl

I never thought I'd see the day that Rowena would choose sleep over food.  Well, that day has come!  Yesterday Peter, Joe, and Grace went to Chicago, and the Littles and I stayed home.  Things were going well, and I got grilled ham and cheese made along with some apple sauce for lunch.  I was reading while the girls were eating and Charlie was napping, and all was good (and quiet) in the house.  Delaney, as usual, was first done, washes her hands and starts to play.  Then Katie gets up...this is when I realize that it is really quiet and Kate finished eating before...Rowe?  So, I blurt out "Where is Rowena?" and then turn around to see, while Kate says, "She's asleep, Mom."  Sure enough, Rowe fell asleep eating.

Thankfully, I was able to clean her up, change her diaper, get her in her sleeper, and into bed without waking her!

Kind and Caring!

Last Thursday Delaney's Daisy Troop had their "Investature Ceremony."  It's where they say the Girl Scout Promise and pledge to be a good Daisy.  They receive a pin and then are to do three good deeds in order to flip their pin.  Delaney was very excited to do several good deeds when she got home.  Every time she did something, she would ask "Is this a good deed?"

A mom made these for all the girls...little daisy rice krispie treats...decorated with blue frosting.  how adorable is that!?
Beware...Proud Parent Alert!!!
Also, while at the ceremony, her troop leader tells me how Delaney was in the principal's office that day...getting her picture taken.  For what?  you might ask. Well, let this proud parent tell you!  Delaney's class voted on one girl and one boy for who is the most kind and caring classmate.  Come to find out...she is!  How amazing is that!?!  Her classmates think that she, Delaney, is the most kind and caring girl in her class.  I am so very proud of her!

Oh, and on a non-related note, here is a picture of Delaney's "Starry Night" drawing she did in art class:

One day she was at the table drawing with Katie and Peter asked her what she was drawing, and she simply replies: "Starry Night.  It's a painting by the artist Vincent Van Gogh."  She was very impressed to find out that Mommy and Daddy knew of both Van Gogh and his famous painting.  Then we showed her all of our Renoir prints around the house and how he is our favorite artist.  I think a trip to the Art Institute is in our near future...

Lost In It All...My New Year's Resolution

I was just reading a friend's blog and realized I definitely do not utilize my time at home with my kids the way I should.  She has several recent posts on fun, easy craft projects she is doing with her 19 month old son.  It really is sad, but I'm glad I am having this realization, and it is my (early) New Year's Resolution to change how I spend my time.  I don't plan to take away from blogging, as it is my therapy as well as a way in which I journal about our life as a family (and I swear one day, when we are back on our feet again, I will turn this blog into a scrapbook--or several).  However, I plan to play more with my children and being creative.

When it was just Delaney and Katie I did craft projects with them often, we would bake more frequently, and did excursions more regularily.  I think I got away from that with graduate school and the addition of Rowena.  Working, school, and three kids was a bit for me to juggle and made it difficult to maintain that fun, easy-going, creative mom-flow I had.  However, I'm done with school, am not working (well, not consistently), and Peter is home.  So, really, what is my excuse?  I have NO idea!  Yes, we have four now, but all the more reason for me to spend QUALITY time with them!  I plan to get started with this resolution next week...the girls will be home from school for two weeks and if I don't get creative, Katie and I might have a dual.

Here are some of the fun things in which I hope to get back to with my kids...
  • Wii Fit Challenges
  • Baking homemade cookies and cakes
  • Coloring
  • Craft projects
  • Board and card games
I need to refocus, get back in the "Mom" mode, and truly enjoy my time with my children. I think in order for me to do so, I need to get my butt off of Facebook...what a time sucker that website is!  I just have my FB page open, as well as my email, 24/7.  I don't get many personal emails, so I can keep that up and open, but FB just sucks me in, with reading statuses and looking at pictures, etc.  So, while I probably won't cancel my account/page, I do plan on only checking it once a week...I think I will dedicate a day in which to do so, otherwise I'll continue to be on it all the time.  And, I plan to map out my days better in order to play with Rowena a bit more, do fun, interactive things with Delaney and Katie, and to make most of my time with Charlie.  After all...they're only young once and as in the post below makes me realize...time goes so fast and soon, friends will be much more important and fun that Peter and I...I need to embrace the moments now and create wonderful, lasting memories--for them and for us!

In Seven Years...

Seven Years Ago...A beautiful baby girl was born in Joliet...with lots of dark black hair and super pink skin.  She was tiny, and unexpectedly arrived 15 days early.  Her name was supposed to be Alexis Lorraine and be called Lexi.  The name didn't fit, so the baby girl went nameless for a night.  She arrived at 7:34pm on a Friday night, during the first snow fall of the season.  She was in NICU for 3 days, but came home on Monday, December 15th.  Her first Christmas tree was up but undecorated (her dad and Uncle went out to get one while Mom and baby were still at the hospital).  Her dog was excited to meet her.  Her name...

DELANEY

She was a quiet baby, making monster sounds and squeaks and grunts.  Barely a cry her first month.  She seemed laid back and loved to take everything in.  She preferred to be carried outward, not a cuddler at all.  She had a stubborn, independent streak in her from the beginning.  She preferred to be hanging out in her bouncy seat or swing over being held and cuddled.  She did enjoy people carrying her facing out and pacing the floor.  She took a long time to smile socially, but tracked things like crazy and always seemed to be concentrating.  While she didn't roll over until 6 months, she was walking like a pro at 9 1/2 months.  She was a pacifier baby, but gave up her bottle easily on New Year's Eve, just three weeks after turning one.

She preferred animals and cars over dolls.  She would line up her cars in a very specific order, and would get upset if one was out of place.  She would go crazy if she saw a dog, often imitating them by panting, barking, or crawling.  In fact, when near a tree, she would go up to it and lift her leg, just as her dog, Coltrane would do.

She has always loved school, starting at the age of 3 1/2.  She seemed to be a quick learner, but struggled at times with being bossy or not allowing others to get their way.  At school she never was out of line, always listening and learning, eagerly too.

In seven years, Delaney has grown into quite the young girl.  She is polite and generous, smart and sensitive.  She can cry at the drop of a hat yet be really strong for others.  She reads like crazy and is always asking questions to get more information.  She scores 100% on her achievement tests at school, and has great behavior at school.  Her teacher has also started to challenge her more.

At home, Delaney can get mean and bossy, but usually is friendly and a lot of fun.  She is helpful and prides herself on being the oldest and doing things that sometimes her siblings can't (like reach for something high, write, read, take showers, etc.).  She plays with her sister, Katie, a lot, usually school--using Barbies and their American Girl dolls as students.  They go through the motions from the bus stop all the way through a typical school day.  She loves video games and is quite good.  She also loves crafts, writing stories, reading, drawing and coloring, and watching movies.  She has become quite the food taster the past few months.  She recently discovered a love for Chinese and Mexican foods.  She is also great with her youngest sister, Rowena.  She often reads to her and shares toys and tries to play with her.  And, she loves Charles and prefers to call him just that.

As for her mom...well, I can't say I could be any prouder.  While I do lose my patience with her at times, she really is a sweetheart.  She is competitive yet sensitive, which can be a roller coaster combination.  She tends to balance it well, and I hope better than I ever did...as she is a spitting image of me--physically and emotionally!  She is pretty amazing with a lot of spirit.  Much of her is still so innocent and I fear the loss of that with school friends and becoming more mature.

So...A Message for Delaney...
Happy Seventh Birthday, our sweet daughter!  We are so very proud of you.  You have a wonderful balance of spirit, independence, and compassion.  Your effort at school is amazing and we are so proud that you love school and do so well.  You remind us every day how wonderful you are with the little things you do.  From helping us out, to being silly, to being kind to your sisters, brother, neighbors, or friends.  We cannot believe that seven years have passed since you joined our family and lives.  The time has passed so quickly, and it saddens us at times.  You are becoming quite the young lady and if you continue on this path, you will be a wonderfully, amazing woman.  The road might fork into several paths, many of which are tempting, many of which are scary.  Just know...your family is here to support you, guide you, hold your hand, push you forward, and, most importantly, love you unconditionally.  We are so very, very proud to have you for a daugther.  Your smile lights up the room, your giggle is contagious, your competitive nature is inspiring, and your sensitive side is sweet and endearing.  We love you so very, very much!
With Love and Birthday Wishes...Mom and Dad! xoxoxo

It's The Most Wonderful Time of The Year

I love this time of year...cold days, beautiful snow falling, festive music, holiday decor, lights that brighten up early nights and dreary days, coffee and hot cocoa, egg nog, fires in the fire place, the spirit that fills the air...

Today we enjoyed decorating our tree, or as Katie likes to say, "Trimming our tree."  We started the morning with some very tasty donuts, yummy coffee (juice and milk for the girls), and some wonderful Christmas music.  The girls couldn't wait to start putting on ornaments.  Poor Kate had some difficulty getting some of the ornaments to hang but she stuck with it and did well.  Delaney loved it, and spent quite a bit of time on the ladder.  Rowe figured the tree was getting enough attention, so she decorated Charlie instead, who was awake for the festivities.

This is the first time Rowena hung an ornament
Rowe has lots of love and affection for her baby brother!!!
Delaney couldn't wait to dig into the ornaments.  We barely finished donuts before her and Kate rushed to the front room to get started.

Katie tried the ladder once, but wasn't comfortable going up that high.  Delaney was a champ on it!
Poor Charlie was decorated by Rowena.

Katie was great at helping me out and being patient on getting the ornaments on the tree herself.
Delaney also put the ornaments on one of our avent calendars

Charlie, Charlie

It's amazing how quickly they grow and change!!!  However, our Charlie isn't growing as quickly as he should (hmm...seems like we've been through this before.  Oh, wait, we have--Katie).  He went to the doctor at 6 days old and was still 5 oz under his birth weight.  At 10 days old, he was still 2 oz under.  According to his doctor, most babies surpass their birth weight by 10 days.  So, he has to go back on Wednesday for another weigh-in.  I just know that soon I will look back on this post and be so sad that he is so big and running around.  Why oh why do the infant stages have to pass so very quickly?!?!?

He sleeps like a champ and is wonderful at nursing.  (I had such a difficult time with Rowena).  He has been more on a schedule the past 2-3 days.  He is up from about 8:30am-10:30am and then again from about 6:30pm-9:30pm.  He naps really well throughout the day, and during his wakeful periods he is wide awake and very quiet.  He sleeps so well at night.  In fact, last night, he ate at 2:30 and not again until 7am!  Well done, Charlie.  Now, if we can only get your sister, Rowe, to not wake up every 1/2 hour beginning at 4am, we'll actually sleep very well!

Until the next Charlie update, here are some recent pictures of our Little Guy...

After his weekend with Nana and his first trip to Grammie & Poppy's
 Sleeping soundly in his basinette
Wide awake during "tree trimming" and probably thinking..."So, this is my lot in life, being decorated by my big sister."  Rowena decided that Charlie needed decorating more than the Christmas tree.
This was actually taken before he was a week old...chillin' in the basement while Katie and Mom played Barbies.  He was so good and slept for a couple hours, Kate was happy!
All dressed up for his "First Christmas" pictures.
